What are secondary keywords and how to use them in FastaSEO

Getting StartedUpdated 153 days ago

Quick answer

Secondary keywords are related phrases that support your primary keyword. They're optional but useful for pages that naturally cover multiple related topics. Add them in FastaSEO under Set Target Keywords on any page.

How to fix it in Showit

1. Think about related phrases your ideal client might search for that would also lead them to this page — not different topics, just different ways of searching for the same thing

2. Secondary keywords work best when they're variations of your primary keyword, location-based alternatives, or closely related services on the same page

3. Avoid adding secondary keywords that are completely different topics — those should each have their own dedicated page

4. In FastaSEO, click on the page you want to update

5. Find the Set Target Keywords section at the top of the page

6. Enter your secondary keyword in the Secondary Keywords field and click Add — you can add more than one

7. Click Save Keywords when you're done

8. FastaSEO will use your secondary keywords to check for additional keyword coverage on the page

What's the issue

A secondary keyword is a phrase that's closely related to your primary keyword and relevant to the same page. For example, if your primary keyword is 'brand photographer Melbourne', a secondary keyword might be 'personal branding photography Melbourne' or 'headshot photographer Melbourne'. The page isn't built around these phrases, but they're naturally relevant and worth including.

Why it matters

  • Your primary keyword is the one phrase your page is built around. But your ideal client might search for the same thing in several different ways. Secondary keywords let you capture those variations without creating separate pages for each one. They also help FastaSEO give you a fuller picture of how well your content covers the topic — checking whether these related phrases are naturally present alongside your primary keyword.

What good looks like

Each page has a primary keyword saved. Pages that naturally cover related phrases also have secondary keywords added. Secondary keywords are variations or close relatives of the primary — not completely different topics.

How long this takes

Adding secondary keywords to a page takes under a minute.
